Art Exclusive

I hung some old art of mine in my studio for Art Camp and this old pastel drawing made the cut. This was part of a series of drawings I did of shoes with pastel and tape. I’m bummed that I have less time to do art just for me that isn’t for work projects. My goal is to have a new art exclusive next month.

Completed Projects

Carman Art Camp
The camp was a great success. I had four students and we created 11 different unique art projects over the course of the week. We had an art gallery on the last day where I set up all the projects in the classroom. Unfortunately, my phone glitched and erased the image. I do have a few pictures of the students working on their projects as well as some images of the whiteboard.

Julycanthropy
I messed up. I only listed 30 days in the challenge even though there are 31 days in July. But I was pretty tired by the end of the project, and Sunday is a rest day, so I decided to take the L and just have 30 Lycans. I really enjoyed this series. I feel the drawings are more illustrative as each one tells a story or begs a question. I am going to take more time to illustrate in the future without the pressure of a daily challenge. That said, here are some of my favorite Illustrations for the month. I will be selling the originals at cons later this month as well as a collected sketchbook that has all 30 illustrations inside.

Current Projects

TOT
I have a few more pages to ink, a couple of issues to color, and covers to draw, but I will finish this before the end of August!
Here is another page teaser. This is a kinda montage panel from issue 3. No spoilers, I swear!

Graphesis
This is the big month! I am starting work on the Civil War comic!  This project is a Graphic Novel Academic Thesis project, thus the name “Graphesis” in collaboration with UGA Press and a professor of History from MTSU. I am very excited to get cracking on this. Here is a concept drawing I did last year when my writer and I were putting the pitch together for this project.

Upcoming Projects

Cons!
I mentioned it last month, but here is my upcoming Con list again!

August 6-8, 2021
Atlanta Comic Con. Atlanta, GA
This show is at the Georgia World Congress Center in Downtown Atlanta. I hope to see you at the show! I’ll be debuting my new Lycanthropy book and my comic, Fear Hunters.

August 14, 2021
FCBD (Free Comic Book Day!)
Infinite Realities Comic Shop. Tucker, GA. This is gonna be a fun day. I will do a raffle, and some sketches, and I’ll have all my books, stickers, prints, and pins for sale.

August 28-29, 2021
Fairfax Comiccon. Fairfax, VA
This show is so far out, I’m not thinking about it much yet, but I am excited about it and can’t wait to have a table at another Incredible Con.

September 18-19, 2021
Incredible Con. Charleston, SC
Next month is forever away…

Art Lesson

Abstract Sculpture
This was one of the art projects I did with my campers last week. It is a really fun project and you really don’t know what you will end up with. Send me a picture if you try it out; I would love to see what you make.

Philosophical Rant

Starting something big.

The Graphesis Project is going to be a doozy! I am going to be thumbnailing my… well… thumbnails off for the next two months. The book is ~144 pages. I thumbnailed 24 of those last year, so I still have 120 pages to do. And then I need to pencil them all, and my goal is to finish before the end of the year. Yikes! But I am very excited and can’t wait to see this project come to fruition. I am also crazy busy with Con’s this month. I am finally getting some decent sleep with Vincent sleeping through the night, so I think I might get to resume my old habit of waking early to get some work done in the morning. (My wife is proofreading this, so this is her finding out about it too…) I am very familiar with this early stage of a project: it is always the best. I am super excited and amped to get going because I haven’t gotten tired of it or overwhelmed. But it is a lot.

My goal is to lean into this. I am about to finish TOT, and usually, there is a gap between big projects like this, but this time there is overlap, so I may even be able to ride some of this Graphesis energy to help me finish TOT strong.

I can’t wait to share more from both of these projects.

Stay safe out there, love each other, and create beautiful things.

Cheers,
A
